Dear Friends,
I’ve just had the opportunity to see some of your birthday wishes on the website and I’m very touched by your comments. I’ll never be able to thank you all enough for supporting my musical endeavours for the past 40 years. My life has been truly blessed by music, but this blessing can only be consumated by having someone who listens to it! After all this time music continues to use me, and the latest results of these inspirations will be soon available on a new CD entitled ‘To the One’. I sincerely hope you all continue to find something in the music that touches you in some way.
Thanks to all,John McLaughlin

PS- PEACE!
Dear John,
Happy birthday to you. I hope you are happy and stay in good health. Thank you for the music you bring, which I follow since my 16th birthday (so for 34 years now).
Just this day someone showed me the Mahavishnu Don Kirshner video, which I’ve seen on Dutch television around 1975, and since then no more: I was thrilled to see and hear again the sharp, edgy sound of the Gibson doubleneck 6/12 str. and the fierce power of the band.
Man, that music will allways be my favorite music: the power, melody, inspiration, wall of sound, speed and completely unique -one and only- sound which never has been performed by anyone before and ever since.
Still your newer music I love as well, but you know how it is……the first real love of your life will be the strongest…..and that’s what it is with the Mahavishnu Orchestra as well: a first love.!
Thank you John, for your marvelous and exciting music…… and please: hop in -in Holland- with your band on your way to the rest of Europe………
Wil
Happy birthday Maestro!! Thank you for your music and your playing that never ceases to amaze and inspire us.
I forgot it was your birthday. There is no excuse. It does not matter how many times we go around the sun man. Call it a day. Many happy returns.
Dear Mr. Mclaughlin,
I still remember the first time I listened to your music. « David » was the first bless I heard from you around 12 years ago. Since then, I cannot compare any kind of joy to what I’m getting from your music.
Shakti’s « Joy » is what I’m practicing now..What an enlightening piece! God Bless you for all the work that you have done.

Happy Birthday and a thousand thanks for changing my life and perception of what music is and can be…was very fortunate to meet you at the Barbican 2 yrs ago-and more fortunate to not cry, vomit or pass out with nerves! So much i wanted to thank you for but in the moment seemed trite and inappropriate….so now can i thank you for ‘Vision is a naked sword’ which has to be one of the most powerful pieces of music i have ever heard,as is the rest of Apocalypse-and Visions of the emerald beyond,i loved the second Mahavishnu lineup so much. And of course Shakti…and, well the list is endless. Special mention to Johnny Mclaughlin Electric Guitarist (my Favorite).

You touched my life with joy. I met a lot of cool people lately who are 68. I myself am 55, a long ways from when I first heard you at 19 the Boston Music Hall. The hair still rises on the back of my neck (what little is still on my head) when I hear your music. Wishing you many more wonderful birthdays.
Congratulations for Grammy Maestro.
We’re waiting to see you again in Rome next May.
(I hope you’ll bless my 335 by your sign…I dream that for years..:-).
All the best with Love & Respect Mahavishnu.
I wish you still play so wonderfull and clear music. Happy birthday maestro !!! King of guitar
Bonjour John je viendrai te voir à Coutances avec mon père jean-philippe
You have always been my favorite guitarist, and your music has been an inspiration to me in a big way. It helped me win the overall title in the California State Bodybuilding Championship back in 1981. Since then, I have gone on to invent a form of geometric art Called « Cyphometry » (U.S. patent pending) there is nothing quite it on the net. If your looking for some New fresh Ideas for a CD cover I may have something you like. (This is not a pitch and NO CHARGE of course) It’s the least I can do and I feel I owe you one. LOL. Happy birthday John, sorry I’m late. Long live the King of guitar… you are the Best!…Eddie.
Dear John,
thank you for your great, blessed music. You and your work continue to inspire me since the mid-seventies, when I first heard your records and tried to seek out the chords. Also the books and filosophies that were sources of inspiration to you, became important in my own life.
salam, warm regards,
Hans
Dear John, my greetings too late…sorry!!
a big greeting from Chile, lots light for you and your family!!
Leo Lopez.
Santiago de Chile.
A belated birthday greeting to the main man!
In 1973, I got a record voucher for my 21st. birthday. I picked up the album Inner Mounting Flame, knew nothing about John McLaughlin but the album cover looked good, guitar and electric violin, an interesting combination I thought. Up to then I had been listening to Clapton, Hendrix and Rory Gallagher. I put the Mahavishnu Orchestra on my turntable and my world changed forever. I had entered an age of discovery, an ‘awakening’. For the first time music had reached my soul. Thanks John
Ridiculously belated bithday wishes, John – I saw you in Norwich last Wednesday evening – just as I saw you there with Shakti in 1978 – and many times with Mahahishnu I and II. The best I can do is post below my Amazon review of the incomparable « Inner Mounting Flame ». It may be completely beyond possibility, but you must know that there are many many thousands of us who would travel across the world to see a gig by the re-formed original Orchestra.
Thank you.
Music, the like of which you’ll have never heard before, 27 May 2009
By Richard House (London, UK) – See all my reviews
This review is from: The Inner Mounting Flame (Audio CD)
I’m in my mid-50s now, yet this album is still the most extraordinary piece of music I have ever heard. It also changed my life when I first heard it – under the bed covers listening to John Peel on my pocket trannie in 1973; and I remember how enthused John was with the album (before it became hip to loath jazz fusion). I’d never ever heard music like it before, and I haven’t since, either. I profoundly disagree with the other two reviewers about ‘Lotus on Irish Streams’ – McLaughlin’s, Goodman’s and Hammer’s playing on this dream-of-a-track is quite breathtaking, and for me their soaring spiritual synergy sums up what the original Orchestra was all about. As the book on the Orchestra says, this truly was ‘the greatest band that ever was’. At less than a fiver, this is unbelievable value – and if you’re wondering what all the fuss is about via-a-vis John McLaughlin’s legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra, this has to be the definitive place to start.
