Legendary musician John Mahavishnu McLaughlin discusses his mother & music with R Prashanth Vidyasagar, ahead of his concert in the city
John ‘Mahavishnu’ McLaughlin is the ‘blue whale’ of fusion music jazz, flamenco, Indian and western classical music…you name it and he’s tinkered with it giving the world some of its most magnificent music. A legendary guitarist, McLaughlin led the bands Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti which were ahead of their time, in terms of the soundscapes. Today, even as he candidly states that young musicians who « don’t even play an instrument » create « amazing music out of the computer », he goes on to call it the « global evolution » of music. Ahead of his concert with the band 4th Dimension, McLaughlin discusses all things melodious in an email interaction.
