My Goals Beyond – 1971

I bought this album a couple of years ago. I have owned Extrapolation, Devotion and most of the Mahavishnu Orchestra albums for many years – bought them on vinyl more or less when they were issued – but I somehow missed My Goal’s Beyond.
Oh what a joy! This album contains some of the best, expressive acoustic guitar playing I have ever heard and some great pieces. Well done, John – an album to enjoy and treasure – 40 years after it was recorded!!
This is one of John’s greatest recordings.
You can sense Chinmoy’s influence throughout the whole concept and mood.
In my opinion, John has achieved some of his greatest artistic heights back when he was still a student of the renowned ambiguous guru.
I read a review saying that My Goal’s Beyond should be listened to at least once per month. I have done so since the early ’70s. What a fine ‘desert island’ album. There’s nothing else like it, and I wish Mr McLaughlin would return to this musical space. Beautiful.
My Goals Beyond to me is one of the greatest expressions passion and the spiritual through the acoustic guitar in modern music. In my over 40 plus years of listening, it has never failed to move me profoundly, challenge my notions of mastery, and thrill me with it’s dynamics of fire and contemplation. I don’t yet tweet, so John, I hope you do see this; as your kindness expressed to me in person many years ago, and the great gift of your life’s work make your birthday a cause for joy and celebration. As you wrote to me on a humble scrap of pizza box back then, now back to you:
« To John, deepest thanks, peace to you » Marc Chabot
One of the most peaceful and spiritual album, inspired by cosmic emotions somehow. And Chinmoy’s wisdom speaking in this music. Would really like to know the exact model of Ovation guitar played here on it.
HARE KRSNA
what happened to the orignal acoustic version of this album? At least I thought
I remembered it that way??
I bought this album when it came out in 1971. It has always been one of my favorite records. Follow your Heart is my favorite song on the record. Beautiful record. I saw JM with Carlos Santana when Love, Devotion and Surrender came out, but still always go back to My Goals Beyond.
on my top ten albums of all time
Simply genial!!
