Hi Friends,
Just a note to go with the photos at the Nice Jazz Festival. You’ll see Chick Corea with the “Freedom Band” which includes luminaries such as Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride and legendary drummer Roy Haynes. Chick invited to go up for the last couple of numbers. Great!!!

Like almost every year we are spending our summer holidays in Montreux during the time of the Jazz Festival. It is the greatest festival in Europe thanks to the founder Claude Nobs.

On the second day , while we were biking along the lake, I got a phone call from Claude asking if I could be jamming that evening with Billy Cobham, before the concert of Roxy Music. The opening act ‘Melissa auf der Maur’ couldn’t make their flight from Canada, and Claude needed a ‘replacement’. I hadn’t seen Billy for 25 years and immediately liked the idea.

Claude called Billy , who lives in Bern and he also was happy to play. I didn’t have my guitar, and there was no rehearsal, it was a very spontaneous jam and we had lots of fun as you can see on these photos.

Not too much has changed in John McLaughlin’s music since his pioneering days on the cusp of the 1970s. He was the guitarist on Miles Davis’s first electric albums and with the power trio Lifetime; he was also the innovative world-fusion bandleader of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and, in 1973, the acoustic band Shakti. He still crams Indian-inflected scales into neatly defined spaces with a blues musician’s tone and extraordinary technical prowess.

Cette véritable légende de la musique qui a joué avec les plus grands, de Carlos Santana à Jimi Hendrix, en passant par Tony Williams, Paco de Lucia… est apparu aux yeux de tous comme un homme humble, calme, réfléchi et intelligent, se pliant au jeu de la mise en scène pour une émission tournée par la chaîne Mezzo, jouant aussi les traducteurs auprès de ses musiciens car l’artiste parle un français parfait. I’m not a paid-up member of the jazz cognoscenti club; unaware of the modals, keys, arpeggio, chords and whatever. I’m a music fan not a technocrat, and love all great music, whatever the genre. Frankly, I don’t give a monkey’s for influences when I’m listening; it’s what I hear and see that matters most. To me all great music is simply great music, it just often happens to speak different dialects. And for the last fifteen years John McLaughlin has been speaking my language. My first listen arrived back in ‘85 when I picked up a hi-fi magazine that happened to feature a selection of its top 50 audio critics’ albums, chosen for sound quality first, music content second. On that list was FRIDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO and ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL LIVE which I ended up acquiring, along with the other 48. As they say, ‘they blew me away’, and I played them for months on end, eventually acquiring vinyl copies, and a further limited edition multi-bit/remastered version of the FRIDAY NIGHT CD.
