Ranjit Barot talks about his upcoming tour with John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension

The phrase “World Music” should suggest a wide-ranging music form that encompasses the music of cultures from around the planet. But it really depends on what part of the world you’re talkin’ about. In my opinion, the phrase is really a generic term used to easily label any music made outside of the U.S.A. or Europe that isn’t in 4/4 time or sung in English.

It took journalist Walter Kolosky eight months to put together Follow Your Heart: John McLaughlin Song by Song(Abstract Logix, 2010), though, in effect, this impressive listener’s guide has been the culmination of a lifetime listening to the English guitarist’s music. Kolosky has written extensively on McLaughlin‘s music for many years, and has interviewed him many times. Few people have dedicated quite so much of their time or expended as much energy as Kolosky, in attempting to understand McLaughlin’s music. This is not the first book about McLaughlin’s music that Kolosky has penned, either; Power, Passion and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra (Abstract Logix Books, 2003) was a long overdue look at the incendiary fusion band that made McLaughlin’s name as guitar legend. The book garnered rave reviews and established Kolosky as one of the foremost authorities on the music of John McLaughlin.

t 68, legendary guitarist John McLaughlin has nothing left to prove.

He’s played with everyone from Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix. And, as leader of the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the ’70s, McLaughlin created a bold new fusion of jazz, rock and Indian influences that remains some of the most challenging music ever recorded.

Currently on tour with a new ensemble that makes a stop tonight at the Granada Theater, McLaughlin was kind enough to take some time and talk about his illustrious career. Read our Q&A with the virtuosic composer in full after the jump.

New Universe Music Festival: Day 2, November 21, 2010

It’s no small challenge to make a new festival viable, especially when it represents something of a niche within a niche. The attendance at the first day of the New Universe Music Festival was impressive enough, but with an influx of even more dedicated fans coming from all over the United States—the Deadhead equivalent of fusion icon John McLaughlin followers, whose performance with his 4th Dimension group was to close out the main part of the second night—there was literally a lineup around the block of the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, North Carolina, before the doors opened at 5:45PM on the festival’s second and final day.

McLaughlin, Stern rose to fame with help from Miles Davis

If Miles Davis had stopped making music in the 1950s, he would be remembered as one of the most eloquent and influential trumpeters in jazz. But Davis, an Alton native who grew up in East St. Louis, was also a visionary who wasn’t afraid to shake things up and didn’t believe in looking back. Beginning in the late 1960s, that meant venturing beyond acoustic post-bop jazz to explore the improvisational possibilities of rock.

At age 68, John McLaughlin, one of the most influential guitarists of the last 40 years, doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

y first contact with author Walter Kolosky was a simple e-mail response he sent to me upon reading my brief bio on All About Jazz, the on-line jazz journal, where both of us were contributing reviewers. I had put a line in my bio stating how my first exposure to the Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971 was undoubtedly the most awe inspiring performance I had ever witnessed.

Whether you call it electric jazz, fusion, or just good old music, John McLaughlin is the forefather of this style on the six string. From his contributions on classic albums by Miles Davis starting with the landmark In a Silent Way in 1969 to his own work with the massively influential Mahavishnu Orchestra and as a solo artist, McLaughlin is a legend who has continued to record with no signs of slowing down.
