Not too much has changed in John McLaughlin’s music since his pioneering days on the cusp of the 1970s. He was the guitarist on Miles Davis’s first electric albums and with the power trio Lifetime; he was also the innovative world-fusion bandleader of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and, in 1973, the acoustic band Shakti. He still crams Indian-inflected scales into neatly defined spaces with a blues musician’s tone and extraordinary technical prowess.
